In an exclusive interview with Looper, makeup head Ellen Arden revealed her long list of credits includes such MCU productions as Black Panther and Spider-Man: No Way Home, as well as The Walking Dead by AMC and Netflix’s ‘Fear’ includes Street movies – said different types of fake blood were used on ‘Werewolf by Night’. Her department used Pigs Might Fly blood, a washable brand of fake blood, while the film’s makeup effects department designed their own fake blood from the KNB EFX Group – who created the monsters in the film.
Arden found that using fake blood, even in a black-and-white production, comes with its own set of standards. “In general, we tend towards dark blood. There’s this whole thing about the color of blood and ratings because blood can affect ratings, whether it’s PG-13 or TV-MA,” Arden said. “There are blood assessments in different markets. There are many thoughts and decisions that revolve around blood. For ‘Werewolf by Night’ [which is rated TV-14], the blood was dark. They read better in black and white since they are dark anyway. The opacity and viscosity are important factors to consider when looking at blood that needs to be legible in black and white and in color while looking real.”
