On August 23, 2022, Netflix Japan tweeted that it was producing a new South Korean live-action adaptation of Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga Parasyte (Kiseiju) titled Parasyte: The Gray.
The tweet also revealed that Train to Busan and Peninsula director Yeon Sang-ho will be directing the series!
Although a release date has not yet been announced, Netflix plans to exclusively stream the series worldwide. Three of the series’ cast members were also revealed: Jeon So-nee, Koo Kyo-hwan, and Lee Jung-hyun.
The series’ screenplay is being written by Ryu Yong-jae, known for his work on Peninsula and Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area.
The upcoming series is inspired by the manga but will tell its own original story set in the Parasyte universe, where an alien race known as the Parasytes has come to earth and started taking over the humans. The aliens enter a human body through their nose or ears and attach themselves to their brain. They regard humans as “food”.
Joen plays Jeong Su-in, who is attacked by a parasite who doesn’t take it properly and she begins a strange life of coexistence with him.
In the original story, the main hero, Shinichi Izumi, is also attacked by a parasite, however, it is unable to take over his brain and only manages to take over his right hand. The hero names the parasite “Migi,” which means “right” in Japanese, and together they begin fighting humans whose brains have been completely taken over by parasites.
Koo’s character Seol Kang-woo hunts people infected with parasites while trying to find his missing younger sister. Lee plays the leader of a special unit called The Gray that hunts down and kills the infected people. Lee’s husband was killed by a parasite, so she’s extremely motivated to take revenge on the bloodthirsty alien race.
