Ranbir Kapoor’s return to the big screen after 4 years hasn’t been well received as the film’s collections don’t live up to the bill. After a poor start from Rs. 10.25 crore, the film showed minimal growth reaching Rs. 10.50 crore on Saturday, bringing the two-day total to Rs. 20.75 million. And now the big Sunday addition is missing shamshera. According to first estimates shamshera has rallied in the region of Rs. 11.50-12.50 crore on Sunday to bring the opening weekend to Rs. 32.75 crores.
The trend was bad all weekend with little growth Friday through Sunday. Being a mass film, it was expected to show some sort of win on Sunday, but a near-flat trend is a clear sign of audience rejection. Curtain up on the film within the first 3 days of its theatrical release and this is a phenomenon that happens on a regular basis in times of the pandemic.
As for the box office, it’s a theatrical disaster, although losses on the table will be minimal due to back-end deals selling digital and satellite rights. shamshera marked Ranbir Kapoor’s entry into mass cinema, but the same audiences didn’t come out to support the film. Multiplexes also remained boring throughout the weekend.
Given the cost involved and the genre shamshera should have recorded a bare minimum weekend of Rs. 50 crore, but it fell short. The film has underperformed itself since opening, and with negative audience gossip it didn’t get a chance to regain lost ground on opening day.
