After Eid and Independence Day, the hype surrounding the big Diwali releases seems to be missing at the moment. Akshay Kumar returns to his favorite Diwali slot with action-adventure Ram Setu, and the initial reaction to the ticket sales is far from what was expected. As of Saturday night, Ram Setu has sold just 11,000 tickets nationwide, with 5,200 tickets in the three national chains – PVR, Inox and Cinepolis.
The progress so far is much less than movies like Gangubai Kathiawadi, Jug Jugg Jeeyo, Laal Singh Chaddha, Samrat Prithviraj, Raksha Bandhan, Shamshera and Vikram Vedha, but the movement of tickets is also affected by the pre-Diwali factor when there are families busy with shopping. From there, it’s important for Ram Setu to pick up some momentum and pace, leading to the film’s release on Tuesday. However, the holiday factor will lead to above-average spot bookings.
Ideally, Ram Setu should have aimed for a start from Rs. 20 crore plus, given the holiday factor as well as the action-adventure theme, but as things stand today we won’t be surprised if it opens below Rs. 18 crores. While the film suffers a clash with thank goodness it is a much larger film and has enough screens and shows to show a large number on the post-Diwali day.
Ram Setu will be heavily dependent on opening day spot bookings and we may be able to predict the film’s first business day by Monday as the upfront pickup will determine its fate and indicate whether or not the momentum is in its favor. Positive word of mouth is necessary for Ram Setu to thrive and bring much needed success to Akshay Kumar.
